Dr S K Sharma is born on 12th
March, 1954 at village Khilru, Tehsil Palampur, District Kangra, HP. He
obtained his B.Sc (Agriculture) from HP University, Shimla during the year
1974 and M.Sc Agriculture (Horticulture) from Agra University in the year
1976. He stood first in the University in M. Sc Agriculture
(Horticulture). He did his Ph.D from GB Pant University of Agriculture &
Technology during the year 1982. After obtaining doctorate degree, he
joined HP Krishi Vishvavidualya, Palampur as Assistant Extension
Specialist/ Asstt. Professor on 14-2-1983. After working there for 4 years
and 8 months, he joined Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture &
Forestry, Nauni, Solan on 21.10.1987 as Vegetable Seed Production
Officer/Associate Professor through open selection. Dr Sharma was elevated
to the post of Sr. Vegetable Seed Production Officer/ Professor w.e.f.
1.4.1996. During his stay at Solan, he has been actively associated with
the teaching of UG and PG classes and has guided 14 M.Sc students and 3
Ph.D students in Vegetable Crops. He was the Principal Investigator of All
India Coordinated Research Project on National Seed Project of the ICAR
and as a result of his work in this University, 28 recommendations
pertaining to Vegetable Seed Production Technology have been accepted at
National level in various AICVIP/ICAR workshops/group meetings. His one
student Dr. Satesh Kumar has received "Dwarkanath Memorial Award"
for best Ph.D thesis research from the Indian Society of Vegetable
Science, Varanasi.
Dr Sharma has been awarded fellowship of Horticultural
Society of India and Indian Society of Seed Technology. He has been
Councillor of Indian Society of Agricultural Science, New Delhi. At
present, he is councillor of Indian Society of Vegetable Science and
executive councillor of Horticultural Society of India. Dr Sharma has
published 101 research papers, 44 popular articles and has presented 57
research papers in national and international conferences. He has
participated in various National and International Conferences, chaired
and co-chaired various scientific sessions at different places and
different forms. He was also awarded "Bharat Jyoti Award" by the
India International Firendship Society. During the year 2006, Dr Sharma
was selected as a Dean, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Jhalawar
(Rajasthan), a constituent college of Maharana Pratap University of
Agriculture & Technology, Udaipur. He has worked there w.e.f. 25.7.2006 to
8.5.2009 and established the College of Horticulture and Forestry.
Probably, this College was the first in the country where the IV Deans’
Committee recommendations of the ICAR were implemented from the Academic
Session 2006-07. Dr. Sharma was nominated by the Director General, ICAR as
the member of Broad Subject Matter Area Committee in Horticultural
Sciences of the ICAR for restructuring the Masters and Doctorate curricula
and syllabi in Horticultural Sciences. Dr Sharma has also been nominated
by Director General, ICAR as member of Research Advisory Committee of
Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi. Dr Sharma also remained
a member of Board of Management and Academic Council and various other
bodies of Maharana Pratap, University of Agriculture & Technology, Udaipur.
He has taken over as Director of Research of Dr Y S Parmar University of
Horticulture & Forestry, Nauni, Solan on 11.5.2009. As Director of
Research, he has been instrumental in streamlining the need based research
programmes and it was during his short stay of just one year and 3 months
that number of research projects worth Rs. 1618.91 lakh have been
sanctioned in favour of this University by the Govt. of India, ICAR and
various other agencies. Dr. Sharma was a member of Senate, Academic
Council, Research Council, Extension Council, Research Advisory Committee
of KVK’s and Advisory Committee of U H F News of Dr Y S P U H & F, Solan.
Recently, Dr S K Sharma has been got selected and
appointed as Director, Central Institute for Arid Horticulture (ICAR),
Bikaner, Rajasthan. He has joined his new assignment on 01.09.2010.
